Remembring Kuldeep Manak on his 70th birth anniversary!

Legendry Punjabi folk singer Kuldeep Manak, commonly known as Kaliyaan da Badshah was born on this day 70 years ago. Kuldeep Manak was a very popular singer around the globe. He used to Sing Kali which is a very rare genre of Music.

His Original name was Latif Mohammed Khan but his stage name was Kuldeep Manak. While he was studying at Government High School, Jalal(Bathinda), Sardar Partap Singh Kairon(then Cheif Minister of Punjab) named him Kuldeep Manak after Listening to his amazing voice at school prize giving. His father Nikka Singh and his brothers were also singers. Kuldeep Manak’s ancestors were the Hazoori Raagis (designated cantors) of Kirtan for Maharaja Hira Singh of Nabha. Manak learned music under Ustad Khushi Muhammad Qawwal in village Bhuttiwala at Muktsar.
He has also given some of the best Punjabi songs/Kalis which are still trening these days. Either Tere Tille Toh or Jindriye he has given hits. His Song Maa Hundi ae Maa is one of the best song for mothers. Hoyeya ki Je Dhee jamm Pyi is best song describing the society. His songs also got featured in recent movies too.

He has done many live shows at that time and he was also one of the busiest singer of that time. Many Punjabi singers also gave him tribute by singing cover on his songs. On 25 December 2012, a tribute single was released by Aman Hayer with the title “The Folk King” (Ustaad Kuldeep Manak Ji Tribute), featuring a number of artists interpreting his songs. A statue of Kuldeep Manak has also been erected in Ludhiana near his residence as a tribute to singer.
