GAY PRIDE REINSTATED; Section 377 abolished.

In a momentous judgment on September 6th, 2018, the Supreme Court of India held that its application to consensual homosexual sex between adults, or section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was unconstitutional. Modeled on the Buggery Act of 1533, this section of the IPC introduced in 1861 during the British rule of India used to criminalise sexual activities “against the order of nature”.The decriminalisation of this act has resulted in major acts of acceptance and celebratory fests by the LGBTQ+ community and supportive masses throughout the country. This propitious adjudication has seen the light of day after a great struggle over the years, from 2009 to 2018. Not only the common crowd, but also big names from the Indian Film Industry were also rejoicing in favour of the verdict. Karan Johar was the first celebrity to tweet about this news on Twitter followed by Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja who posted a photograph of the Pride Flag with the optimism of a “day when there won’t exist labels anymore”. Aamir Khan hailed the “historic day” and Ranveer Singh exhibited his support with a photograph of himself in a coat with the colours of pride with the caption “ONE LOVE #377verdict”. Other B-Town celebs like Preity Zinta, Arjun Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Farhan Akhtar also took to twitter to thank the judicial system for this glorious judgment. Termed ‘twenty gay-teen’, 2018 is expected to see flying colours of triumph in the coming phase of the year as well.
