Television is a stepping stone for every actor to showcase their talent and grab big opportunities. It’s the first step for the actors to climb the mountain and to reach on top. And to prove this, we have a few Punjabi actors who first worked in Television and now are ruling the Pollywood industry.
Sargun Mehta gained fame in 2015 after her debut film ‘Angrej‘ in the Punjabi Industry. She was paired opposite Amrinder Gill as the main lead and was praised for her acting skills. Sargun’s first Television show was 12/24 Karol Bagh in 2009. Later she did daily soaps like Phulwa and Balika Vadhu and also hosted the famous dancing show ‘Boogie Woogie’.
With Angrej being the second best-grossing film of the year 2015, Sargun won three PTC Punjabi Film Awards. She also earned two Filmfare awards for her work in the Punjabi industry. After ‘Angrej’, she did films like ‘Lahoriye’, ‘Love Punjab’ and ‘Qismat’. She recently featured in the song ‘Kudiye Ni’ sung by Aparshakti Khurana. Her upcoming projects include ‘Surkhi Bindi’, ‘Laung Laachi 2’ and ‘Qismat 2’. Now, she is the most promising actress amongst the Punjabi actors.
Jaswinder Bhalla is one of the most talented Punjabi actors. He started his career with acting on stage on Republic Day and Independence Day. He started off his career from the show, Chankata 88 aired on Doordarshan channel in 1988. Bhalla needs no introduction today and is the first name that strikes people’s mind when talking about comedy. He has done other shows on Doordarshan as well.
Jaswinder Bhalla made his Pollywood debut from the film ‘Dulla Bhatti’. He is also a full-time professor at the Punjab Agricultural University but still manages to make us laugh with his hilarious taglines. Professor Bhalla has played amazing characters in a number of films. Some of them are Jatt and Juliet, Carry On Jatta, Daddy Cool Munde Fool, Mr. and Mrs. 420 to name a few.
Binnu Dhillon was a student of television and theatre in Punjabi University, Patiala. The TV serial Paddu was the first stepping stone for him. Later, he appeared in many Daily soaps Sarhad, Lori, Gaoundi Dharti, and Professor Money Plant. However, he made his debut on the silver screen with the film Shaheed-E-Azam. Although he played small roles in Shaheed-E-Azzam and Dev D, he was highly appreciated for his acting skills. He is one of those Punjabi actors who are known for their comic timing.
Dhillon is the face of Comedy in the Pollywood industry but is also a versatile actor. He has played comedy characters in films like Carry On Jatta, Mr. and Mrs. 420, Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, Angrej, Goreyan Nu Daffa Kro, Kaala Shah Kaala and many more. Other than comedy, Binnu has also played a different kind of character in the film Bailaras and Channo Kamli Yaar Di. He is such a wonderful actor that almost every Punjabi movie has Binnu Dhillon in it. He made his Bollywood debut with the film ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se’.

Gurpreet Singh Waraich, popularly known as Gurpreet Ghuggi started off his television career in 1998 through the show ‘Ronak Mela‘. After ‘Ronak Mela’, he got a lead role in a soap opera ‘Parchhaven’ and also some shows including ‘Ghuggi Express’ and ‘Ghuggi On Line’. He received recognition on a national level by participating in a show on Star One named ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge‘.
Gurpreet Ghuggi stepped into the Punjabi film industry with the film ‘Jee Aayan Nu‘. The movies which gave him major recognition include Carry On Jatta, Ardaas, Lucky Di Unlucky Story, Muklawa, Manje Bistre, Son of Manjeet Singh to name a few. He will be soon seen in the film ‘Ardaas Karan‘ which will hit the big screen on 19th July. Ghuggi has also appeared in the Bollywood film Akshay Kumar’s ‘Singh is Kinng‘. Other than this, he also has been featured in a Hollywood film ‘Breakaway‘.
The Chandramukhi Chautala of F.I.R., Kavita Kaushik is not only the face of Indian Television but also a popular face in Pollywood now. She has done Television shows like F.I.R., Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, CID, and Kutumb to name some. She also participated in popular reality TV shows including Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.
Kaushik has featured as the main lead in some Pollywood films like Vadhayiyaan Ji Vadhayiyan, Vekh Baraatan Chaliya, Nankana, and very recently in Mindo Taseeldarni. She has also worked in some Bollywood films and made her debut from the film, Ek Hasina Thi. Kavita played the role of Saif Ali Khan’s Girlfriend in this film.
Surveen Chawla is a very famous personality and beautiful actress. She has done many Punjabi films like ‘Taur Mittran Di’, ‘Saadi Love Story’, ‘Singh vs Kaur’, Lucky Di Unlucky Story’ and, ‘Disco Singh‘ to name a few. Surveen started her career through a television daily soap, ‘Kahin to Hoga’. She has also worked in the very famous television opera ‘Kasautii Zindagi Kay’ in 2004. She has also hosted ‘Comedy Circus Ke Superstars‘, a television comedy show.
Surveen made her film debut with a Kannada film ‘Paramesha Panwala‘. Later, in the year 2011, she made her Pollywood debut with the film ‘Dharti’ in 2011. She has not looked back since then. Moreover, Chawla has also played the main roles in Bollywood films which include ‘Hate Story 2’ and Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Ugly’. She recently became a mother of a baby girl and has been in news for her first photoshoot with her baby Eva.
The ‘Canteeni Mandeer‘ fame anchor, Ravneet Singh is a popular face amongst the youth today. Ravneet is one of the Television celebs who is now an actor and singer too. He made his debut in singing with the song ‘Lakh Laahnta’ which crossed over 2 million views on YouTube. And because he’s a Gold medalist in theatre, he made his acting debut with the Pollywood film ‘Jatt vs. Ielts’.
Ravneet has also sung songs like Maybe, Chann De Varga, Hardwork, Viah Vala Card, and Raje Jatt. His recent song, ‘Jaan Warda‘ has become a big hit amongst the listeners.
